Musicologist Julia J. Chybowski researches and publishes about historical musical cultures of the United States. She’s a leading authority on biography and reception of Elizabeth Taylor Greenfield, an African American singer who toured the U. S., Canada, and U.K. in the mid-1850s as the “Black Swan.” She’s also researched and published on “music appreciation” as a cultural movement in early-20th century America. Her latest work sheds light on little known nineteenth-century Black musicians including songwriter Joshua Simpson and the Luca Family Singers.
